Travelers Rely on Smartphones More than Anything Else

When you leave your house in the morning, whether headed to work or on a trip, what is the one item you refuse to walk out the door without? If you’re like me, that item is your smartphone. You and I apparently aren’t alone.

According to the Expedia and Egencia Mobile Index published earlier this year, travelers rank their smartphones as their top priority when on the go. The Mobile Index proves that mobile devices are not only important when planning trips, they are indispensable when on the actual trip.

Logically, this makes sense. Without a smartphone, how would one quickly find an event in the area, look up directions to a nearby attraction, send a photo of their vacation to their social networks, or keep tabs on work emails? In fact, more than half of the survey’s respondents agreed to feeling “lost” without their smartphones on a vacation, and 35% reported using their phones more on vacation than they typically do at home.

Chinese and Taiwanese travelers had the highest dependency on their mobile devices, where 94% of survey respondents named their smartphones as an important item to travel with, followed closely by Thai travelers where 91% felt smartphones were important. On the other hand, travelers from Germany, Norway and Sweden are much less attached to their smartphones.

Mobile devices are so important that survey respondents ranked them higher than a toothbrush or a driver’s license. Obviously, the mobile channel is not one that digital marketers can ignore. A mobile application that provides information on local attractions, restaurants and events will impress guests and make their information search much easier. Additionally, hotels that have a large presence online are more likely to be trusted than hotels that do not have active social media profiles or a recently updated website.

Our reliance on smartphones is something that can’t be ignored, because the Expedia/Egencia survey has proven that they are our most valuable possessions when traveling.
